Transforming a Dated Deck into a Modern Outdoor Living Space

These Colorado Springs homeowners came to us ready to replace an aging wood deck that no longer complemented their home.  While the existing deck offered a reasonable amount of square footage, large stucco columns surrounding the space made it feel much smaller and more enclosed than it actually was.

Their goal was to create a more inviting outdoor living area with better flow, improved curb appeal, and a clean, modern appearance.

Working with our clients, we designed a 292-square-foot composite deck that replaced the bulky elements of the original structure with streamlined materials and a more open design.  The finished deck combines a galvanized steel deck frame, Deckorators Voyage Sedona composite decking, Fortress Fe26 Traditional steel railing, and integrated lighting to create an outdoor space designed for both appearance and long-term performance.

Building for Long-Term Strength with Steel Deck Framing

This Colorado Springs property is located within a Hillside Overlay (HSO) zone, although it is not within a designated Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) area.  Even without the WUI requirements, the homeowners decided to make a forward-thinking investment by choosing a galvanized steel deck frame rather than the traditional pressure-treated KDAT wood framing.

Steel framing provides exceptional strength and dimensional stability while eliminating concerns about rot and insect damage within the deck framing.  Because steel stays straighter and more consistent over time, it also provides an excellent foundation for premium composite decking.

Deckorators Voyage Sedona Composite Decking

Choosing the decking material was another important part of the design process.  Our clients carefully considered the multiple makes of composite decking before ultimately selecting Deckorators Voyage Sedona with a single-board picture frame in Khaya.

Sedona provides the warm, rich appearance they wanted while offering the low-maintenance advantages of premium composite decking.  The color also helps the new deck feel like a natural extension of the house rather than an addition that was designed separately.

The result is a durable attractive surface that gives the homeowners the appearance they wanted without the regular staining and maintenance associated with a traditional wood deck.

Creating a More Open View with a Fortress Fe26 Railing

One of the most noticeable changes involved removing the large stucco columns that contributed to the heavy, enclosed appearance of the original deck.

In their place, we installed a Fortress Fe26 powder-coated steel railing system with a drink cap in the Sedona material.  The slimmer profile of the steel posts and railing immediately opened the space, improved sightlines, and gave the entire deck a cleaner, more contemporary appearance.

This change demonstrates how railing selection can have a significant impact on a deck’s overall design.  Although the footprint of an outdoor living space may remain similar, removing bulky visual barriers can make the finished deck feel considerably larger and more inviting.

Adding Safety and Ambiance with Integrated Deck Lighting

Lighting was incorporated into the new deck design to enhance both safety and nighttime ambiance.

We installed nine lighted flat pyramid post caps with the Fortress railing system, creating subtle perimeter lighting around the deck.  The stairs also feature six Leila 3-inch LED strip lights from HighPoint Deck Lighting, providing additional visibility after dark.

Together, the lighting creates a warm nighttime ambiance without overpowering the space.  It also extends the usability of the deck beyond the daylight hours, making it an inviting place for relaxing or entertaining on Colorado evenings.

A 292-Square-Foot Deck that Feels Even Larger

The completed 292-square-foot deck demonstrates that creating a better outdoor living space isn’t always about adding more square footage.  Thoughtful design decisions can completely change how a deck looks and feels.

By eliminating the bulky stucco columns, introducing a streamlined steel railing system, and introducing it with Deckorators Voyage Sedona decking and a galvanized steel deck frame, the new deck feel significantly more open, modern, and connected to the home.

Most importantly, the homeowners now have an outdoor living space they are excited to use.  Instead of an aging deck that felt enclosed and dated, they have a beautiful, low-maintenance space ready for summer evenings, entertaining family and friends, or simply relaxing outdoors.
