Unsafe Deck Turned into an Outdoor Oasis in Rockrimmon

Safe, Stylish, and Built for the Colorado Front Range

When our customers purchased their home in the Rockrimmon area of Colorado Springs, one of the first things they noticed was that the existing deck was unsafe and at the end of its lifespan.  With the home located on the west side of town – where wildfire risk is an important consideration – they knew they needed a deck that was not only beautiful, but also durable, low-maintenance, and more fire-resistant than traditional wood.

That’s why they contacted Decks by Schmillen.  Working closely with our clients, we designed and built a new 408 SF composite deck that checked every box: safety, longevity, comfort, and curb appeal.

Why Composite Decking was a Must Have

For these homeowners, composite decking wasn’t just a preference – it was a requirement.  They wanted:

Low Maintenance – No more annual sanding, staining, or sealing.  composite decking allows them to spend more time enjoying the deck and less time maintaining it.

Improved Fire-Resistance – On the west side of Colorado Springs, fire resistance is an important consideration.  Composite materials offer better ignition resistance than most traditional wood products, providing an extra layer of comfort in a wildfire prone environment.

Clean Lines and a Finished Look

The owners selected Deckorators Voyage Mesa decking, which is known for its attractive, variegated color tones that mimic natural wood.  The Mesa color offers a warm, natural look without the upkeep of wood.  To create a polished, professional appearance, we installed end boards and a divider board to avoid butt seams.

RDI Metal Panel Railing in Matte Black

For safety and style, the homeowners chose an RDI metal panel railing system with 3″ x 3″ posts in a sleek matte black finish.  This railing features clean, modern lines that complement the composite decking and visually frames the outdoor space without feeling heavy or obstructive.  We also added a drink cap in the Mesa material that was designed to hold our client’s numerous plants.

A Calming Backyard Retreat in Rockrimmon

What was once an aging, unsafe deck is now a soothing, welcoming outdoor living area.  The warm tones of Deckorators Mesa, the clean lines of the metal railing, and the thoughtful design details all work together to create a space that feels both modern and inviting.

Whether they’re hosting guests, grilling on the weekend, or simply unwinding after a long day, our clients now have a deck that matches their lifestyle and enhances their home.
