Composite Deck and Cedar Pergola Outdoor Living Upgrade
A Backyard Vision Turned into Reality
When these homeowners approached us, they had a general vision for upgrading their outdoor living space. They wanted something modern and low-maintenance, but also warm, natural, and inviting – a space that could function equally well for everyday relaxation and large gatherings with family and friends.
Together, we designed and built a 384-square-foot composite deck topped with a custom cedar pergola, creating an outdoor retreat that is both beautiful and highly functional.
Durable and Stylish Composite Decking
At the heart of the design is the deck surface itself. Our clients chose Deckorators Vista Dunewood for its natural woodgrain look and long-lasting performance. To add visual depth and a custom touch, we installed Ironwood divider and end boards, which create clean lines and a sophisticated design with a polished, integrated look.
The perimeter of the deck was completed with Miratec fascia, stained to match the home’s existing trim. This detail ensures a seamless transition from house to deck, elevating the overall design with a polished look.
Elegant Fortress Deck Railing with Lighting
Safety and style were equally important for this project. We installed a Fortress Fe26 Traditional railing system, featuring powder-coated steel panels and 3-inch posts for strength and durability. The sleek black finish enhances the deck’s modern design while keeping sightlines open to the backyard.
For nighttime use, we added flat pyramid post caps with built-in lighting. These not only create a warm ambiance but also improve safety by subtly illuminating the railing and deck perimeter after dark. The homeowners now enjoy their outdoor living space long after the sun sets.
Custom Cedar Pergola with Drop-Down Shade
One of the highlights of this project is the cedar pergola that crowns the deck. Designed for both form and function, the pergola was built with:
- 6″ x 6″ support posts for strength and stability
- 2″ x 10″ framing to provide a substantial structure
- Traditionally cut rafter tails for timeless architectural character
To coordinate with the home, we applied a solid-body stain that matches the trim, tying the pergola into the overall exterior design. The result is a structure that looks like it belongs with the home while providing shade and definition to the deck area.
To enhance privacy and flexibility, we installed a drop-down sunshade at one end of the deck. This feature allows the homeowners to control sunlight and block afternoon glare while also creating a more intimate setting for entertaining or relaxing. Its a small addition that makes a big impact on comfort and usability.
Blending Beauty, Function, and Durability
This project showcases how thoughtful design and material choices can completely transform an outdoor space. The low-maintenance composite decking ensures easy upkeep, while the cedar pergola and trim details add natural warmth and character. With the addition of the Fortress railing, integrated lighting, and a sunshade, our clients now have an outdoor living area that is as practical as it is beautiful.
Whether they are hosting friends, enjoying a family dinner outdoors, or simply relaxing with a book in the shade, this new deck and pergola create the perfect setting.
