Backyard Oasis Designed with Wildfire Mitigation in Mind
At DBS, we love turning our clients’ outdoor living dreams into reality. These homeowners envisioned their backyard as a relaxing oasis – an inviting space to gather with family and friends, watch TV outdoors, and enjoy the company. Working together, we designed and built a custom ramada (patio cover) that combines beauty, function, craftsmanship, and is designed with wildfire mitigation in mind.
A Free-Standing Gabled Patio Cover
The centerpiece of this project is a free-standing gabled roof patio cover designed to complement the existing home and beautifully landscaped yard. The vaulted ceiling is finished in tongue-and-groove pine stained with PPG semi-transparent Tahoma Brown stain, bringing warmth and natural texture to the space. Recessed lighting and a ceiling fan add comfort and convenience, making this patio perfect for day or evening entertaining.
To seamlessly match the home and improve wildfire mitigation, we installed stone-coated metal roofing tiles in the same style as the main house. Unlike traditional materials, stone-coated metal tiles are highly fire-resistant, making it an excellent choice for properties in Colorado’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones. This upgrade not only blends beautifully with the home’s architecture but also provides an added layer of protection.
Perfect Outdoor Space for Game Day
One one end of the patio cover, we built a cedar half-wall that serves both as a design element and a functional feature. Since electricity was being run for the lights and fan, we also added outlets in the half-wall and on the two support posts closest to the house. This thoughtful addition allowed the homeowners to mount a TV on the half-wall, instantly transforming the patio area into an outdoor entertainment space.
Custom Deck Stairs and Railing
The existing deck did not have a staircase leading down into the backyard, which limited accessibility. To solve this issue, we built closed deck stairs with a 90-degree turn landing. This designed minimized the footprint while still providing a safe and stylish transition to the yard. We added antique bronze Genesis step lights from HighPoint Deck Lighting on every other riser to provide ambiance and safety in the evenings.
For a clean, modern look, the staircase is finished with a Fortress AL-13 powder-coated aluminum deck railing in white. Its sleek design perfectly complements the natural wood and stone elements of the backyard.

Now, the homeowners have a backyard oasis that meets all their needs for relaxation and entertainment. Whether they’re enjoying a quiet evening, hosting friends for dinner, or watching the big game on the outdoor TV, this space provides comfort, style, and functionality!
