Custom Heart Redwood Deck with Open Shed Roof Deck Cover

Our clients had a wood deck that was original to the house.  While it had served them well for many years, it no longer offered the comfort or layout they wanted.  They reached out to us with a vision: upgrade the deck, improve the design, and create a warm, inviting space where they could relax, entertain, and enjoy Colorado’s beautiful weather.

Working closely with them through the design phase, we transformed their ideas into a stunning custom-built Heart Redwood deck paired with an open shed roof-style deck cover that looks like it has always belonged on the home.

Transforming an Older Deck into a Modern Outdoor Living Space

The original deck had a simple footprint that utilized more yard space then they would like.  Our first step was designing a layout that complemented the home’s style while improving usability.  Heart Redwood was selected as the decking material for its natural beauty, durability, and warm red tones.

The boards installed at a 90-degree angle to create clean lines and highlight the wood’s natural grain, resulting in a deck that feels both high-end and inviting.

Custom Deck Stair Redesign and Patio Extension

One of the most significant upgrades was the redesign of the staircase.  The owners wanted better flow and a smaller footprint, which required creating an entirely new footprint for the deck stairs.  To make this possible, we extended the existing concrete patio, allowing us to support the newly designed stairs safely and effectively.

This thoughtful addition not only improved functionality but also tied the upper and lower outdoor spaces together, creating a more cohesive environment.

Open Shed Roof-Style Deck Cover Built to Look Original

A well-designed deck cover adds comfort, shade, and year-round usability.  The homeowners wanted a cover that looked like it was original to the house – not added as an afterthought.  We built a custom shed roof-style deck cover with lines, overhangs, and materials that blend seamlessly with the home’s architecture.

Metal Panel Deck Railing System

To complement the natural beauty of the Heart Redwood deck, we installed a Fortress Fe26 Traditional deck railing in matte black.  The railing is anchored by 4″ x 4″ redwood posts, adding visual balance to the sleek metal posts.  To finish the look, we added a matching Heart Redwood drink cap.  The combination of materials creates a striking balance between durability and design.

With the upgraded layout, added patio extension, custom shed roof-style deck cover, and railing system, our clients now have a versatile outdoor living space that will serve them for years to come.  They are thrilled with the transformation and are eagerly awaiting the warm weather to start enjoying their gorgeous new deck!

Before – This redwood deck was built at the same as the house and needed to be replaced.

MR 1 – When designing the new deck and cover, we realized that the homeowners would need to have new concrete installed.

MR 2 – The deck cover is an open shed roof design with a tongue and groove pine ceiling.

MR 4 – During the design phase, the homeowners decided to change the footprint for the deck stairs.  We were able to build this 180-degree turn landing with a new concrete area at the bottom.

MR 5 – The homeowners decided to build their new deck using Heart Redwood, which resulted in this beautiful, rich color for the decking.

MR 6 – The railing is a Fortress Fe26 metal panel system with a Heart Redwood drink cap on both the deck and the landing.
