Amazing Hardwood Decks in Cascade with Custom Deck Railing

Giving Multiple Decks in Cascade a Refresh

Our clients owned a beautiful home tucked into the hills of Cascade, Colorado – but their exterior spaces were ready for a major upgrade.  Multiple decks and staircases, originally built with aging redwood, had served the home for decades, but wee now in need of a full replacement.  Working closely with the homeowners, Decks by Schmillen developed a fresh deck design that feels modern, refined, and perfectly matched to the rugged mountain landscape.

Choosing Cumaru Hardwood for Beauty, Strength, and Fire Performance

For the decking material, the owners selected Cumaru hardwood, also known as Brazilian Teak – a premium tropical hardwood renowned for its durability and longevity.  Cumaru naturally exceeds the requirements for a Class A fire rating, giving homeowners in mountain communities added peace of mind.

Its exceptionally dense composition provides superior resistance to termites, decay, and harsh weather, making it one of the most reliable hardwood available.  The rich, medium golden-brown color tones with subtle tan variations create a warm, welcoming outdoor atmosphere that complements the home’s setting.

Modern ViewRail Deck Railing for Unobstructed Mountain Views

To achieve a clean and contemporary look, our clients selected a ViewRail Onyx Rod Infill deck railing system.  Featuring 3″ x 3″ posts and 1/4″ horizontal rods in matte black, this railing design blends modern minimalism with durability.  The open, horizontal rod system ensures that mountain views remain unobstructed – one of the most important priorities for this mountain property.

To bring warmth and cohesion to the design, we added a matching Cumaru flush drink cap, tying together the rich hardwood textures with the sleek railing profile.

A Cohesive, Mountain-Ready Outdoor Living Area

The completed project features multiple interconnected decks and staircases, each rebuilt for long-lasting performance and tailored to the way these homeowners enjoy their mountain lifestyle.  With the durability of Cumaru hardwood, the crisp lines of the ViewRail system, and the thoughtful design approach of DBS, the result is an exterior transformation that is as functional as it is beautiful.

Now, these Cascade homeowners can relax, entertain, and take in the breathtaking Colorado scenery from outdoor spaces built to last for decades.
