Modern Composite Deck Transformation in Colorado Springs

A Complete Redesign for a Modern Outdoor Living Space

Our client had a dated redwood deck with limited usability and lots of wasted space.  She reached out to Decks by Schmillen for a modern, low-maintenance solution that would better suit her lifestyle.  Working together through the design phase, we created a plan that not only enhanced the appearance of her outdoor space but also improved functionality from top to bottom.

New 13′ x 12′ Composite Deck Built for Style and Durability

We designed and built a 13′ x 12′ composite deck using premium materials chosen for their longevity and clean appearance.  The deck includes under-deck skirting to provide a clean, enclosed area ideal for storage and to prevent animals from nesting below.

To replace the outdated wooden walkway along the side of the house, we installed a stamped concrete walkway with integrated solar lighting, giving the entire exterior a streamlined, contemporary look.

Premium Decking Materials with a Striking Color Combination

For the main body of the deck, our client selected Deckorators Voyage Sedona, one of the brand’s top-performing mineral-based composites.  Its warm, earthy tones pair beautifully with the home’s exterior.

To elevate the design, we installed a single-board picture frame border in Deckorators Vista Ironwood, creating a polished, custom edge around the deck.

The 5-foot-wide closed deck stairs feature Sedona treads with Ironwood risers.  We also installed Pikes Peak step lights from HighPoint Deck Lighting on alternating risers.  This thoughtful combination ensures both safety and subtle nighttime ambiance.

Modern Fortress Deck Railing System in Antique Bronze

To complete the contemporary look of her new deck, our client chose a Fortress Fe26 Traditional powder-coated deck railing system in Antique Bronze.  This railing offers exceptional strength with a sleek profile.  Lighted post caps were added to enhance safety and evening visibility while contributing to the deck’s overall aesthetic.

Functional and Stylish Under-Deck Skirting

During the design phase, our client noted that she would like a way to close off the area under the deck yet still retain access so she could use it as storage.  We used the Ironwood material to build the under-deck skirting and added a custom access gate behind the stairs.  By enclosing the space, the skirting not only provides additional storage and creates a crisp, finished look that complements the rest of the design but prevents animals from nesting below the deck.

A Beautiful Outdoor Space – Ready for Every Season

Once the project was completed, our client wasted no time decorating her new deck for the holidays!  The finished space is inviting, low-maintenance, and designed for everyday enjoyment, providing a modern outdoor retreat she’ll love for years to come.

1 – The old redwood deck was built using the partial stone wall as a support.  The owner wanted to keep the wall, so we designed the new deck around it.
