Expansive Outdoor Living Space with a Custom Deck and Cedar Pergola

Transforming a Small Patio into a Dream Retreat

Our clients’ home began with only a small concrete patio and a wooden deck extension.  While it provided some outdoor space, it simply wasn’t enough for the entertaining and relaxing lifestyle they envisioned.  They wanted a larger, more functional outdoor living area that would allow them to hose gatherings, enjoy Colorado’s sunshine, and take in the stunning Rocky Mountains.

Together, we designed and built a 400 square foot custom composite deck – complete with a cedar pergola, privacy walls, and thoughtful details that make this space both beautiful and functional.

Built for Durability and Low Maintenance

At Decks by Schmillen, we know that Colorado’s climate demands durability.  For the structure, we used Northern CrossArm pressure-treated KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment) framing lumber, ensuring stability and long lasting performance.  One section of the frame was engineered specifically to support the weight of a hot tub, making the deck not just beautiful but highly functional for year-round enjoyment.

For the decking surface, our clients chose Deckorators Vista Ironwood composite decking, installed at a 90-degree angle to the joists.  To achieve a seamless, polished look, we incorporated single end boards and divider boards to avoid butt seams.  This combination provides beauty with the modern advantages of low-maintenance composite.

Elegant Railings and Finishing Touches

Safety and style go hand-in-hand on this deck.  We installed a Fortress Fe26 Traditional powder-coated steel railing system, complete with 3″ x 3″ x 39.5″ posts, pressed dome post caps, and a side-mounted drink cap made of matching Ironwood material.  The drink cap adds both convenience and functionality, offering the perfect spot for guests to set down their drinks while enjoying the view.

Cedar Pergola for Shade and Character

To create a focal point and offer shaded comfort, we constructed a 10′ x 18′ cedar pergola with traditionally cut rafter ends.  The pergola was finished with two coats of PPG solid-stain Hickory, chosen to complement the home’s trim and enhance the natural beauty of the cedar.  Not only does the pergola provide relief from the Colorado sun, but it also adds architectural character to the space.

Privacy Walls for Comfort and Seclusion

On the opposite end of the deck, we designed and built two 4-foot high cedar privacy screens, also stained in the PPG Hickory.  These walls give the homeowners added seclusion from neighboring properties, making the deck feel like a private retreat while still staying open to the breathtaking mountain views.

Outdoor Living for Every Occasion

This newly designed space blends durability, style, and functionality.  Whether our clients are entertaining friends and family, soaking in the soon-to-be-added hot tub, or simply unwinding with a glass of wine at sunset, their deck offers the perfect setting.  With its blend of composite materials, steel railings, and natural cedar accents, this project showcases what’s possible when thoughtful design meets expert craftsmanship.
