Outdoor Oasis in Monument with Covered Deck and Overhead Patio Heaters

11′ x 24′ Composite Deck with an 11′ x 22′ Gabled Deck Cover in Monument

The owners of this home in Monument, Colorado reached out to Decks by Schmillen to remove their existing deck and create an outdoor oasis they could enjoy for years to come.  Together, we designed an 11′ x 24′ composite deck paired with an 11′ x 22′ gabled deck cover – a layout that adds comfort, style, and all-season usability.

A Stronger Start – Rebuilding the Support Columns

Our clients initially hoped to reuse their existing columns, but after an internal inspection, we discovered the columns were completely rotted and unable to safely support the new structure.  To protect the investment and ensure long-term performance, we rebuilt the support columns for durability, safety, and clean architectural lines.

45-Degree Decking Layout with Picture Frame Contrast

For the decking, the homeowners selected Deckorators Vista Ironwood, installed at a 45-degree angle to the joists for a bold, upgraded look that stands out from standard 90-degree angle deck designs.

To elevate the finish even further, we added a single-board picture frame in Deckorators Vista Dunewood, creating a crisp outline that beautifully complements the rich Ironwood tones and gives the deck a polished, custom look.

Sleek, Modern Railing with Low-Maintenance Performance

For safety and style, we installed a Fortress Fe26 Traditional powder-coated panel railing system finished with pressed dome post caps.  This creates a modern visual line while maintaining strength and durability – perfect for a high-use outdoor living space in Colorado’s changing weather conditions.

A Staircase Redesign that Improves Flow and Curb Appeal

The design of the existing staircase didn’t fit the new vision, so we designed a completely new set of stairs that feels intentional and visually striking:

  • Open deck stairs
  • 4-feet wide for comfortable traffic flow
  • A 5′ x 9′ landing
  • 180-degree turn on the landing, improving layout and creating a dramatic, architectural transition from deck to yard.

The result is a staircase that’s not only functional, but a standout feature of the overall project.

Gabled Deck Cover with Vaulted Ceiling, Lighting, and Overhead Patio Heaters

Above the deck, the new gabled deck cover features a vaulted, tongue-and-groove ceiling finished in WoodTone Canadian Ice Lager – a bright, refined look that keeps the space feeling open while adding a high-end “finished room” feel outdoors.

To extend enjoyment into the evenings and colder months, we included:

The Final Result is Comfort and Style in Every Season

With a rebuilt support system, custom angled decking, modern railing, a showplace staircase, and a fully finished gabled deck cover complete with lighting and overhead heaters, our clients now have a true all-season outdoor living space – built for comfort, made for entertaining, and designed to last.
