300 SF WUI-Approved Composite Deck in Northwest Colorado Springs

This home in Northwest Colorado Springs is located in both WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) and Hillside Overlay Zones, which means material choices are important.  Our client wanted to remove a small, aging wood deck and replace it with something larger, more comfortable, and far lower maintenance – without sacrificing style.

WUI-Approved Decking and Clean, Seamless Layout

We designed and built a 300 SF composite deck using Deckorators Venture Sandbar, a WUI-approved decking option that delivers the look of natural wood with the durability homeowners want in Colorado’s changing weather.  To keep the deck surface clean and intentional, we incorporated a single divider board in the layout.  This design choice helps avoid scattered butt seams, creating a more seamless, high-end appearance across the deck.

Custom Fit Around a Stone Retaining Wall

One of the biggest challenges on this project was a stone retaining wall in the backyard.  Instead of forcing a standard layout that would leave awkward gaps or interruptions, we carefully cut and fit the decking boards to wrap around the wall cleanly.  Once the deck was complete, the transformation was dramatic – only the top of the stones are now visible, which gives the entire space a polished, built-in look and maximizes usable deck area.

Steel Railing and Open Steps for Safe, Easy Access

For safety, durability, and a crisp modern finish, we installed a Fortress Fe26 powder-coated steel deck railing on one end of the deck.  On the other end, the deck was designed for a more open feel, featuring two short railing panels and three open steps, creating an easy and inviting transition into the yard.

The Finished Result

The end result is a bigger deck that feels cleaner and more functional – built with materials that make sense for a WUI setting, and designed to complement the home while helping our clients enjoy their outdoor living space in style and comfort.

Diamond piers that will be installed to support a new composite deck in Colorado Springs

6 – On this project, we used Diamond Piers instead of concrete footings with support posts anchored to the footings.  The Diamond Piers require no excavation and are frost-heave resistant up to 60″ deep.
